Your beloved fifth wheel is designed to provide you with durable and convenient transportation and accommodations for all of your outdoor adventures and inner-city travels. However, in order to keep it working properly, you do need to perform some regular repairs. Many fifth wheel repairs are fortunately very easy to make at home, so there isn’t a need to always bring your RV into a repair shop when you have a problem. Here are some of the issues you can easily address at home.

Review Your Owner’s Manual

Before you do anything, it’s helpful to look at your fifth wheel’s owner’s manual to ensure that you are using the correct products for your fifth wheel. The manual should also tell you when to perform certain maintenance tasks. You can jot down any repairs you make to your fifth wheel in the manual to keep track of maintenance.

Lubricating Slide-Outs & Hinges

Your fifth wheel trailer likely has some slide-outs on it that help to expand the interior space, creating a more cozy living experience. Those slide-outs do require some regular lubrication in order to keep them from jamming up and becoming stuck in place. Take some time to clean all of your slide-out tracks and check for signs of rust or damage before applying the appropriate lubricant to them. Also, check all the hinges and locks on doors and windows and lubricate those as needed.

Check Tire Pressure & Condition

The tires on your fifth wheel require some regular attention to ensure that they don’t suffer a blowout on the highway. Since they support the full weight of your fifth wheel, make sure to inspect each tire on a regular basis for cracks in the sidewall or balding treads. Air up each tire to the correct psi levels, which you can check with a tire-pressure gauge.

Inspect Water & Power Systems

Finally, you’ll want to check over both the water and power systems in your fifth wheel to make sure that they work as they should. For the water system, you’ll want to flush out your blackwater tank regularly and inspect the whole system for any leaks or blockages. With the power system, it’s important to ensure that every appliance is getting the power it needs. Installing a surge protector can help to prevent blackouts or brownouts at a campground power source.
